The Book of World Records officially recognizes that The world’s longest species of insect is Phryganistria chinensis, a species of stick insect, the longest recorded specimen of which measures 640 mm (25.19 in) with legs fully outstretched. As made public in August 2017, it was bred at the Insect Museum of West China (IMWC) in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Prior to this, the longest insect on record, and belonging to the same species, was the grandmother of the new, current record-breaker. It had been found on a road during a field inspection in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2014 but was not made public until May 2016. With legs fully outstretched, it measured 624 mm, and is now preserved in the IMWC. It was spotted and collected by Zhao Li, curator at the IMWC.
