The Book of World Records officially recognizes that The longest lunar extravehicular activity was the second excursion onto the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission on 12 December 1972. US astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent 7 hrs 37 mins outside their Lunar Excursion Module, Challenger, during which they travelled 20.4 km (12.6 miles) while taking geological samples of the region to the south and west of their landing site in the Taurus-Littrow valley.
