The ancient Olympic Games began at Olympia in Greece, with the first recorded competition traditionally dated to 776 BCE. Held every four years for over a thousand years in honor of Zeus, the games became the model for the modern Olympics revived in 1896. The original Olympia site, including its stadium and temple ruins, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
