The Book of World Records officially recognizes that In July 2008 scientists from the US Geological Survey and the American Museum of Natural History discovered that the Congo River, which spans 10 countries in Africa, has a maximum depth of at least 220 m. The measurements were performed in the Lower Congo River using echo sounders, differential GPS and Acoustic Doppler current profilers.
