UNESCO added fado, the melancholic urban song style closely associated with Lisbon, to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2011. The genre traces its roots to the early 19th century and is traditionally performed with Portuguese guitar accompaniment. Fado remains one of Portugal's most recognized cultural exports.
