Although its summit sits at only 6,263 meters above sea level, well below Mount Everest, Chimborazo's location just over one degree south of the equator places it atop the planet's equatorial bulge. As a result, its peak lies about 6,384 kilometers from Earth's center, more than two kilometers farther out than Everest's summit. Guinness World Records recognizes Chimborazo as the mountain peak farthest from the center of the Earth.
