Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen led the first team confirmed to reach the geographic South Pole, arriving on 14 December 1911, roughly a month ahead of a rival British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. Amundsen's careful planning and use of sled dogs are widely credited with his expedition's success.
