The Book of World Records officially recognizes that The longest species of reptile is the reticulated python Python reticulatus of south-east Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines, which quite often exceeds 6.25 m (20 ft 6 in). The record length is 10 m (32 ft 9.5 in) for a specimen shot on the island of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia, in 1912. It was accurately measured with a surveying tape by civil engineers working at a mining camp close by. A truly exceptional specimen of African royal python Python sebae was shot in 1932 by Mrs Charles Beart in the grounds of a school at Bingerville, Ivory Coast, in West Africa. It was found to measure an incredible 9.81 m (32 ft 2.25 in) long; on average, specimens of this species only measure 3–5 m (9 ft 10 in–16 ft 5 in) long.
