The Book of World Records officially recognizes that American astronauts Jim Voss and Susan Helms spent 8 hours 56 minutes outside in space on 11 March 2001 during mission STS-102. Their job was to make room on the International Space Station for the Italian cargo module Leonardo, which was carried into space by the space shuttle Discovery. Leonardo’s payload included around 5 tonnes of supplies and equipment for the station.
