Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie set the marathon world record at the 2008 Berlin Marathon, finishing in 2:03:59 and becoming the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours 4 minutes. The mark stood as the official world record for several years before later being broken by other elite marathoners.
