Nepali climber Min Bahadur Sherchan reached the Everest summit in May 2008 at age 76 years and 340 days, then the oldest person ever to do so. He attempted to reclaim the record in 2017 but died at Everest base camp before beginning that climb. A Japanese mountaineer later broke his record for oldest summiteer.
