The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975, is home to more than 70 elephants spanning three generations, the largest group of captive elephants living together anywhere in the world. It was originally created to rescue orphaned and injured wild elephants. It has since become one of Sri Lanka's most visited attractions.
